Ajani leads NPL goals chart again

Sunshine Stars’ attacking midfielder, Ibrahim Ajani, has once again shot to the top of the scorers’ chart of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) after Week 25 games were concluded on Sunday.

Ajani stepped up to score from the penalty spot against Sharks at the Gateway International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode to increase his goals this season to 11 in his side's 2 - 0 win.

Earlier in the game, Ajanii had also provided the assist after great work on the wing to free Ukeyima Akombo to tap home from close range into an empty net.

Ajani is just a goal ahead of Kwara United forward, Kabiru Sanusi, who has scored 10 goals this term.

The former Enyimba man is also ahead of Victor Barnabas (Enyimba), Brendan Ogbu (Enugu Rangers), Gambo Mohammed (Kano Pillars), Ehiosun Ekigho (Warri Wolves) and George Akpabio (Plateau United), who are all hot on his heels for the top scorers’ award.

Coincidentally when Ajani last scored in the league for Sunshine Stars from the penalty spot against Bukola Babes in a home game on March 13.

Ajani, who recently returned to Nigeria after a two-week trial at Israelii club, Maccabi Haifa, told Naijaligue.blogspot.com that he believes he will finish the season as the league’s top scorer in spite of experiencing a period of drought in front of goal.

“It happens in football,” began Ajani, whose last two goals in the Nigerian topflight have been from the spot. “But I know I will start scoring again and when I do, no one will catch up with me.”
